Approved where? Seven Merchant Center beliefs Google Ads doesn't share

Seven beliefs merchants and forum helpers have posted about Merchant Center and Shopify's Google & YouTube app, each quoted and dated: an app's "Approved," a product that's visible, a quiet feed. Each one is corrected from Google's help pages and comes with one check you can run in the account.

A brown paper parcel on a roller conveyor inside a lit glass gateway, with more gateways receding into fog between still water and misty trees.

This is for people who run Shopping or Performance Max and see products in Merchant Center or in Shopify's Google & YouTube app, but not in Google Ads, or watch them stop serving. Each heading quotes a dated forum belief and then corrects it. Under each heading are Google's own words and one check. A belief made the list only if a real person held it, Google's current documentation contradicts it, and you can test it in Merchant Center, the app or Google Ads.

Not covered here: price or availability mismatches (Cascader's One product, two sale prices walks through a constructed example), feed optimization, suspensions, bids and budgets, and which feed app to buy.

The order follows a product from the app to the auction. Item 1 covers what "approved" means, items 2–3 cover which products Google Ads may use, items 4–6 cover how working products leave, and item 7 covers why nobody hears them go. Menu names are Google's as of October 2026, and Google moves them. Where a forum reply was wrong, the item says so.

1. "We currently have … products approved on this app" (harls) — Google says the app's Approved products are "successfully synced to Merchant Center"

harls wrote that on October 27, 2023, when the app's local inventory feature asked for "at least 10 approved products" and over 5,000 showed as approved. The app was right about the one thing it measures: "Products with the Approved status are successfully synced to Merchant Center." Eligibility is decided later, separately for each marketing method and country.

To check, filter Merchant Center's Needs attention tab by marketing method, as harls was told. Then confirm that your data source's Marketing methods include Shopping ads.

2. "It must be connected already if Merchant Center can see products" — seeing products isn't the same as a link

Hi14 asked this on April 21, 2024, after moving from Wix. Merchant Center had "82 products in Website Feeds, 0 in primary feeds," and Google Ads had none. Google Ads reaches products only through a link to one Merchant Center account, and the app connects whichever account you pick or create. Campaigns never switch accounts: to use a different one, "you'll need to create a new campaign."

To check, compare the Merchant Center ID in three places: the app's settings, Google Ads › Tools › Data manager, and each campaign's settings.

3. "Google Ads can only use products from a Primary Feed" — crawled products can run once ads are enabled for them, and campaigns may then take in more products and locations

Hi14's thread of April 21, 2024 ("82 products in Website Feeds, 0 in primary feeds," none in Google Ads) got that reply from DaisyVo on February 14, 2025, and it corrects Hi14's belief too far. Products that Merchant Center crawls from your site sit in a "Found by Google" source, "ready for use in Shopping ads and other marketing methods." Google's page says: "If your Merchant Center account is using Shopping Ads, you can include or exclude automatically added products in Shopping Ads." If you enable ads for them, campaigns "may include additional products found now or in the future and in additional locations."

To check, open Settings › Data sources › Found by Google. See whether ads are on, and which campaigns target all products.

4. Nothing changed, so nothing should break: "I have not made any changes and do not understand" — an unrefreshed product expires after 30 days

Swisabeauty wrote that on December 13, 2022, with 28 of 58 products left. Standing still isn't neutral: products "expire from your Merchant Center account 30 days after the last refresh," and campaigns on an expired feed "won't be able to serve." The app refreshes them only while its sync runs.

To check, look for "Needs update" in Products. If sync is on and items still age, use Google's Shopify App Support form (Product Syncing › Products not syncing). Before any reinstall, export sample item IDs with their data source and feed label, and compare them afterward.

5. "I thought I was doing the right thing by adding Product type (custom)" — a campaign that selects on the old value loses those products

TYJ wrote on July 22, 2022: "I thought I was doing the right thing by adding Product type (custom) !!" Earlier in that thread, Irena had done just that. Her campaign's inventory filter still held the old value, so every product left Google Ads. Selections don't follow the feed ("the listing group isn't automatically updated"). In Google's app, if you have "configured a single country to be part of multiple Shopify markets," those "products in overlapping markets are now separated into dedicated country data sources," and campaigns filtering by the old data source label "will no longer capture the products." Campaigns targeting all products aren't affected by that, though the moved products are still treated "as new items, which resets their performance history."

To check, read Google Ads › Products › Diagnostics at account level. Look for "The product is excluded by the campaign's inventory filter" or "The product or listing group has been excluded."

6. "The solution is to uninstall and re-install the app" — a reinstall can hand Google Ads new products

That was a regular helper's standard fix on February 14, 2026, given again in March and April. Reinstalling Shopify's Google & YouTube app can unstick a sync, and it can also replace your products. Alexx345 reinstalled in April 2026, and "a product with 200 conversions now has 0 metrics." The old IDs were SHOPIFY_RO_… and the new ones were SHOPIFY_ZZ_…, with the same Shopify ID underneath. Google says: "If you change the ID, you'll overwrite your product and its history." A new data source can have the same effect with the ID unchanged. Products moved into new sources for overlapping markets are treated "as new items."

To check, export sample item IDs with their data source and feed label before any reinstall, and compare them afterward. A new ID or a new source can mean product history starts over.

7. "Nothing is disapproved" — a missing product isn't an error

housecomfortliv wrote this on February 14, 2025, after a new campaign stopped: "everything is 100% fine nothing is disapproved." The Needs attention tab lists problems with products Merchant Center has. A product that was never sent isn't there, and archived products are hidden from it. A merchant whose France feed label sat at zero in August 2026 wrote: "a feed that silently stops being populated produces no signal anywhere. A disapproval at least gets flagged."

To check, compare three counts on a schedule: products available to the app, items in each Merchant Center source, and products in Google Ads at account level, where "No campaigns advertising this product" shows. Merchant Center Next "counts each product only once." Google Ads lists "the number of products per country of sale or feed label," and "additional countries on your offers won't be" listed. That difference is expected. Chase any other gap.

Under all seven: whose screen is talking

Every belief here assumes Google Ads sees a product the way the app or Merchant Center shows it. It doesn't. The app shows what it synced. Merchant Center shows what it holds: an ID in one data source, under one feed label, with its target countries and marketing methods, until it expires. Google Ads takes that ID through one Merchant Center account, fixed when the campaign was created, and through that campaign's own filters. Every "approved" you can read is one of those places reporting on itself. The only screen that speaks for Google Ads is Google Ads, read at account level.
