A visual investigation

# The hole the search term leaves out

A small hole and a thick plate can each be good business. Watch what happens when a buyer needs both.

![Four circles drawn on translucent paper hover above two solid square steel blanks, one thin and one thick. The drawing has not yet become either part.](https://cdn.mymidnight.blog/ced556cd9f9c0c8315cfbe0744a3baf0/2026/09/cascader-20260906-idea-003-feature.png)

Conceptual illustration, generated with ChatGPT.

A buyer sends a drawing for this mounting plate. Four 0.100″ holes. A 2″ square outline. In ⅛″ stock, its holes clear the supplier’s minimum. Now make the stock four times thicker.

Both views use the same dimensional scale.

**Clears the hole-size check**

0.100″ is above the 0.032″ minimum for 0.125″ stock.

304 stainless steel, fiber laser. Selected limits from [SendCutSend’s material table](https://sendcutsend.com/materials/stainless-steel/?ref=cascader.io#specifications), read 6 September 2026\. These are nominal drawings, not production files.

The thick version looks identical from above. Its 0.100″ hole is now below the 0.125″ minimum. The buyer can still need exactly that part.

Widen the holes to 0.250″ and the size check passes. But the assembly may require the original holes. **“We can cut it if we change it” is a different offer.**

__Three combinations clear this check. One falls below the minimum.__
| 304 stainless | 0.100″ hole | 0.250″ hole |
| ------------- | ----------------- | ----------------- |
| 0.125″ stock | Clears this check | Clears this check |
| 0.500″ stock | Below minimum | Clears this check |

Hole-size check only. Full drawings, tolerances, other features, price and delivery still need acceptance. These are supplier-specific limits, not universal limits of laser cutting.

## Five enquiries. Which words would you stop buying?

These five **constructed enquiries** are for a shop offering this cutting process. Each asks for 20 finished plates with the 2″ square outline above. Each buyer’s existing assembly fixes the stock thickness and four hole diameters. The buyers accept the shop’s other stated geometry, stock, finish and tolerance conditions. No price or delivery has been accepted.

Try a negative on the five searches below None “small holes” · phrase “thick plate” · phrase \[stainless mounting plates\] · exact \[laser cut half inch stainless with 0.100 inch holes\] · exact

All five enquiries remain visible to this offer.

A

### stainless mounting plates

Ad retained

0.125″ stock · Ø0.100″ holes

Can proceed to pricing.

The drawing supplies the small holes; the stock selection supplies their thin section.

B

### stainless mounting plates

Ad retained

0.500″ stock · Ø0.100″ holes

Below the hole minimum.

Same search as A. The thicker stock turns the same small hole into a quoting stop.

C

### thick plate laser cutting

Ad retained

0.500″ stock · Ø0.250″ holes

Can proceed to pricing.

The shop can quote thick plate when the holes are large enough.

D

### laser cut small holes

Ad retained

0.125″ stock · Ø0.100″ holes

Can proceed to pricing.

The shop can quote small holes when the stock is thin enough.

E

### laser cut half inch stainless with 0.100 inch holes

Ad retained

0.500″ stock · Ø0.100″ holes

Below the hole minimum.

B’s combination, disclosed before the click. This exact query can be excluded from the current cutting offer.

Literal matching for the five strings shown, using [Google’s Search negative-keyword rules](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2453972?hl=en&ref=cascader.io). This is not a traffic forecast or a complete exclusion list. “Can proceed” means the illustrated check permits pricing, not that the buyer will accept the quote.

The exact negative for E would remove that search and leave the compatible work alone. **It would also leave B.**

## B still needs twenty plates.

B needs the missing combination, on one drawing repeated twenty times. Can a supplier make and price the batch without changing the part B needs?

That is a reason to seek a price, not evidence that the job will pay. The first useful constraints to get from B are the last acceptable arrival date and any price ceiling. A technically possible part that arrives too late or costs too much does not solve this request.

### One drawing. One batch price. One arrival date.

Ask a prospective production supplier to assess **B’s unchanged drawing**: can it supply all twenty finished plates, what would they cost, and when would they arrive? A description of a possible method is not yet that reply.

Can the supplier make these plates as drawn?

Written confirmation of the material, thickness, hole size and position, and accepted tolerances. Identify any departure and how the dimensions would be verified. An enlarged hole cannot quietly become the answer.

What would B pay?

A price for the complete batch: all required operations, finish, handling and transport, with the shop’s costs and margin included. A price for making the holes alone leaves the parts unpriced.

Will B accept the price and arrival date?

A delivery commitment compared with B’s required date, and the complete price put back to B. The enquiry becomes an order only when the buyer accepts the actual offer.

Start with a drawing-specific feasibility and budgetary reply. If its cost or timing already rules the job out, stop there. If it looks promising, resolve the production and acceptance details before making a firm promise.

### A discussion is easier to offer. What is B buying?

The hole size is fixed. There is no permission here to sell B a larger-hole redesign. A paid discussion needs a deliverable B actually wants—for example, a written assessment of the **unchanged request**, its production obstacles and the further evidence needed to quote it.

That purchase would deliver**One written assessment**

No finished plates included.

B’s assembly still needs**20 finished plates**

Same drawing. Same stock. Same holes.

Offer the assessment with a defined deliverable and its own price. If B buys it, the shop has sold an assessment. If B declines, it still has an unfulfilled parts request. Neither answer establishes whether B would buy the plates at their eventual production price.

Keep the assessment order separate from the parts enquiry.

### The current cutting process has a clear limit.

The shop can decline these plates: its current process does not offer 0.100″ holes through 0.500″ stock. Explain that combination and leave B’s drawing intact.

Preserve the request as twenty finished 304 stainless plates with those dimensions, not simply “bad lead” or “small holes.” The shop can revisit it when it has a credible way to investigate the complete parts price and delivery. The shop does not have to take on that work today.

Ask for the drawing and stock thickness

## Custom 304 stainless mounting plates, cut to your drawing.

“Select your stock thickness and upload your drawing for a hole-size check and price. We’ll identify a hole-and-thickness conflict before offering a cutting price.”

Keep the general service, thick-plate and small-hole entry points open to that check. Exclude the explicit conflict where its words permit it. At the drawing, distinguish a part this process can price from a request for a combination it cannot yet supply.

One accepted quote for B’s plates would establish one order; a broader offer would need more evidence of buyers for that combination at a workable price.

The next useful result would be B’s unchanged drawing attached to a finished-parts price and an arrival date B can say yes to.

Dimensions, sources and limits of this construction

The four hole centers are 0.375″ from the nearest edges of a 2″ square, giving 1.250″ center spacing. The largest holes here leave 0.250″ from the hole edge to the plate edge and 1.000″ between holes. The illustration changes nominal thickness and diameter only; the actual finish and stock thickness tolerances can differ by thickness.

Both passing examples are also above the recommended minimum. The failed example is below the stated minimum, rather than merely below a recommendation. The table also lists ±0.005″ cut tolerance for both thicknesses. No part was submitted to a supplier and no actual quote failure, customer demand or ad result is reported here.
