# "No recent conversions" but GA4 shows the event: is tracking broken?

- Description: A quiet Ads status beside a busy GA4 count can mean few ad clicks or a setup fault. Count the chain to find which, then ask what a Donate click proves.

Not necessarily, but the status cannot settle it. GA4 counts the event for every visitor. Google Ads can credit a conversion only to an ad click, which it recognises by the click ID (GCLID), [crucial for imported GA4 conversions](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2375435?hl=en&ref=cascader.io). A quiet Ads status beside a busy GA4 count can therefore mean few ad clicks. It can equally mean a setup fault, and Google's pages say so: the [conversions summary](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10993988?hl=en&ref=cascader.io) says the label may mean no paid clicks converted in 7 to 14 days, or a tag problem, while the [Ad Grants guide](https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/9841491?hl=en&ref=cascader.io) says 7 days. Count before changing settings.

## Count the chain

This assumes the action is a GA4 key event imported into Ads. Invented counts for 30 days, three accounts:

If columns extend beyond the page, scroll sideways. With a keyboard, focus the table and use the arrow keys.

Look at traffic. | GA4 sees the event on ad visits; Ads credits none. Look at the import. | Credited, but not counted for bidding. Look at the action's setting. |

For B, check that the event is marked as a key event, GA4 is linked to this Ads account, auto-tagging is on and the action exists as an import. Imports start from setup, without history, and can take [up to 24 hours](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2375435?hl=en&ref=cascader.io). A drop between rows 1 and 2 points to an unlinked GA4 property, auto-tagging, or redirects losing the click ID. For C, actions created from the GA4 side start as secondary, which shows in "All conversions" but not "Conversions". Our [form-rebuild answer](https://cascader.io/blog/conversion-tracking-form-rebuild-ppc-management-scope/) lists further checks.

If the action is instead a native Ads click conversion, an event snippet called from the link's onclick as [Google describes](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6331304?hl=en&ref=cascader.io), GA4 is not in the chain. Skip rows 2 and 3 and test the link with Tag Assistant.

## When the empty link is the first

Grant ads appear independently or in a [separate auction after paid ads](https://www.google.com/grants/faq/?ref=cascader.io). Where paid ads show, a Grant account starts behind, and bids are capped at $2.00 unless a [conversion-based strategy and performance justify more](https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/98870?hl=en&ref=cascader.io). There is also a loop: conversion-based Smart Bidding depends on accurate tracking, and Google says it [won't spend if it sees no conversion opportunities](https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/1332166?hl=en&ref=cascader.io) at the desired cost. A silent action can starve its own campaign of clicks.

So before editing tracking, read Impressions and Clicks for the campaigns using the action. Near-zero clicks mean the status describes a traffic problem. Healthy clicks with empty rows 2 to 4 point to tracking or attribution to check. Google also asks an active Grant account to [record at least one conversion a month](https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/9841491?hl=en&ref=cascader.io), so neither can wait forever.

## What a click away proves

By "click away" I mean a click on a Donate link that sends the visitor to another site, which GA4 calls an outbound click. Suppose 100 ad clicks produce 62 Donate clicks. That is a 62% conversion rate and no knowledge of any gift. Google's [compliance guide](https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/9314402?hl=en&ref=cascader.io) asks that a high rate reflect a meaningful action. The Ad Grants conversion guide lists transactions on third-party payment platforms and recommends GA4 import; it mentions tracking a button click only for sign-ups lacking a confirmation page. It does not say whether a Donate click qualifies, so do not assume it does.

To see the gift, the platform has to take part. [Cross-domain measurement](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10071811?hl=en&ref=cascader.io) needs your GA4 tag ID on its pages. Another route is the platform sending GA4 a purchase event; Ads needs its [value as a number](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9520128?hl=en&ref=cascader.io). Other routes may exist, so check its documentation.

Mind the order. GA4's automatic outbound-click event is [not recorded for domains in your cross-domain list](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/13566436?hl=en&ref=cascader.io). If your conversion rides on that automatic event, adding the platform silences it. Google's pages do not say whether a custom Donate-click event is affected, so test before and after, and move the conversion to the gift event first.

If the platform can do neither, keep the click as labelled intent. A campaign that bids on conversions, with this action primary and in its goals, will chase click-aways; a Maximize clicks campaign will not. The platform's own gift records are the independent check, because GA4 and Ads [share one event](https://cascader.io/blog/google-ads-conversions-dropped-clicks-continue/) and cannot confirm each other.
