A campaign name is written for someone who already knows what happened. Then that person leaves, the year changes, and the name keeps turning up in the Monday report.

Welcome to a small museum of these survivals. Every campaign, person and history below is invented. The paper, brass and other materials are imagined mounts for things that usually live in a column.

## GEN / lamps / TEST £20

*Exhibit 1\. Temporary experiment. In continuous service.*

Twenty pounds a day, for a fortnight, to find out whether anyone wanted the lamps.

They did. There were more lamps. The budget acquired another digit. Someone was hired to pack them.

The owner still called it “the little test” when she rang the agency. Her calls grew less frequent. For a while she rang only when something went wrong, which was unnerving but also what everyone had wanted.

The name retains the amount she was prepared to lose before she knew any of this.

## Search - North - AB

![The campaign name is engraved on a small brass plate, held by two screws.](https://cdn.mymidnight.blog/ced556cd9f9c0c8315cfbe0744a3baf0/2026/09/cascader-20260920-idea-002-02-initials.png)

*Exhibit 2\. Initials, subsequently classified as geography.*

AB was Anita Bell. North was the territory. The hyphens kept them politely apart.

Anita put her initials on campaigns she was still building, so nobody would helpfully start fixing them. After she left, a new operator added “AB — northern subregion” to the naming glossary. It was an intelligent guess. There were enough other regional abbreviations to make it look right.

Anita had brought in oranges during winter, the little easy-peel ones. Nobody wrote that down.

Her initials now appear in a document that explains the account to people who will never meet her.

## BF\_2018\_use\_this

![A red sale ticket carries the campaign name on the topmost of several overlapping paper labels.](https://cdn.mymidnight.blog/ced556cd9f9c0c8315cfbe0744a3baf0/2026/09/cascader-20260920-idea-002-03-friday.png)

*Exhibit 3\. Seasonal object. Year retained through repeated reuse.*

In 2018 there were two Black Friday campaigns and one of them had the wrong offer. “Use this” was a message to a particular person, on a particular Thursday, with very little time left.

The next year they copied the right one. They changed the offer, checked the dates, replaced the ads and forgot the name.

After that, the old year became reassuring. It meant they had found the familiar thing. In November someone would ask, “Have you got the 2018 one?” and someone else would say yes.

The wrong campaign is long gone. The right one is still pointing away from it.

## Brand - ask Jo first

![A folded square of paper bears the campaign name; a corner has been turned down.](https://cdn.mymidnight.blog/ced556cd9f9c0c8315cfbe0744a3baf0/2026/09/cascader-20260920-idea-002-04-warning.png)

*Exhibit 4\. Standing instruction. Explanation formerly available nearby.*

Jo had put the warning there after two people made changes during the same afternoon and spent the next morning undoing each other.

Years later, a colleague hesitated over the campaign while Jo sat three desks away. Could it be touched? Was there something unusual about it?

Jo looked up. “Oh. That. Just tell me what you're doing.”

The warning had developed a much sterner voice than its author.

## UK\_Generic\_Copy (4)

![Four offset paper slips form a small stack, with the campaign name on the top sheet.](https://cdn.mymidnight.blog/ced556cd9f9c0c8315cfbe0744a3baf0/2026/09/cascader-20260920-idea-002-05-copy.png)

*Exhibit 5\. Fourth copy. Original absent from the collection.*

The first copy was a quick way to build something similar. The next was copied from that. By the fourth, the keywords, ads, locations and purpose had all changed.

On a handover call, someone asked which campaign this was a copy of.

There was a pause, then the soft clicking of several people looking. One shared a screen. Another searched an old export. It became the most collaborative part of the handover.

They never found the original. They did discover that two of them had worked with the same freelance designer.

## New Campaign

*Exhibit 6\. Name assigned on creation.*

On her first day, the account's new operator asked which one this was.

“The old one,” said the person handing over.

She laughed. He laughed too, though he'd said it before. They went through the account together. She took notes, found a few things to ask about, and, before the call ended, created a campaign of her own.

She called it `New - Sept`.
