# Merchant Center shows my products. Why does Google Ads say there are none?

- Description: Merchant Center seeing your products doesn't mean your store's Google app is connected, or that Google Ads can use them. Read which data source they sit under, test the link, then read the campaign's product list.

A product count in Merchant Center tells you one thing: products arrived in that account. Google Ads needs two more things before it can advertise them. That Merchant Center account must be linked to the Google Ads account you're working in. And the products must be eligible for your campaign and selected by it. Each of the three can fail on its own.

Only one failure shows itself clearly. If the link is missing, a new Shopping campaign offers no Merchant Center account to choose. The other failures share one campaign symptom: a campaign with nothing to show. The campaign's product list (step 3) is where they separate. So check them in order, and start in Merchant Center. There, the useful evidence isn't the count but which data source the products sit under. That also answers the follow-up question: if the store's Google app is installed, isn't it connected already?

## Three links, one campaign symptom

Labels and paths here follow Google's and Shopify's help pages as documented on 15 October 2026\. Both interfaces change, and older Merchant Center screens called data sources "feeds". If a label has moved, the three links still apply.

## 1\. Read the source before you touch Google Ads

Products can get into Merchant Center in several ways: a file, a Google Sheet, the API, a connected ecommerce platform such as Shopify's Google & YouTube app, or Google finding them on your website. In that last case Google scans your product pages, reads their structured data and adds the products to your account. Merchant Center's help says these crawled products appear in a "Found by Google" section of the Product sources tab. On the same tab, a "Source" column shows how each data source was added.

Two rules in Google's documentation turn that section into a diagnostic. The crawl doesn't add products that are already in another data source. And if the same product is both found on your site and uploaded by you, Merchant Center keeps the uploaded version and removes the crawled one. So if your whole catalogue sits under "Found by Google" and none of it comes from the app, the app isn't currently supplying those products to *this* Merchant Center account. Merchant Center can see your products because Google read your website, not because your platform is connected.

There are two documented exceptions, and both fit the same logic. First, a platform's first load is slow: Google says it can take up to 3 days for all products from an ecommerce platform to appear, so crawled entries can linger while that happens. Second, a product the Shopify app shows as **Not approved** hasn't synced. Google's help for the app says those products "aren't synced" because of errors or missing data, so the crawl can still list them. If you see a mix, some products from the app and some under "Found by Google", check the crawled ones in the app first.

**So should you connect the app? Yes.** Google recommends managing product data through the ecommerce platform once it's connected, so the store stays the place you edit products. Crawled products can serve ads; Google delivers them "ready for use in Shopping ads and other marketing methods". But they depend on your pages' structured data, and their ad use is a setting. Merchant Center's controls run both ways. Turning ads off is on the Data sources tab, which Google says can "disable ads for products found by Google". Turning ads on is on the Products tab, which Google says "Allows active AFE merchants to enable ads, non-active merchants to activate AFE when enrolled". If you rely on crawled products for now, check that ads are enabled for them.

On Shopify, installing the Google & YouTube channel and connecting it are separate steps. After installing it, you connect a Google account, then select or create a Merchant Center account. Google's help for the app says a product sync starts only after the Merchant Center account is connected and any required product data has been added. If the app is installed but isn't feeding the account you're looking at, these are some of the documented causes:

| Cause | How it shows up |

Before you connect an existing Merchant Center account, Shopify's documentation gives two warnings. If the account already has a product feed, the app overwrites it to avoid conflicts. And if your domain is claimed by a different Merchant Center account, the app can transfer the claim. That transfer can't be undone, and it automatically disapproves data feeds in the original account that link to your domain. After a platform move, find out which account holds the claim before you transfer it.

## 2\. Test the link, then pin down three account identities

Google requires the Google Ads and Merchant Center accounts to be linked before you can set up a Shopping campaign, or a Performance Max campaign that uses a Merchant Center feed. The quickest test is to start creating a Shopping campaign. It asks you to choose the Merchant Center account with the products you want to advertise. **If no account is listed, the link is missing.** If the account is listed but the campaign finds no products, the link is working, and the problem is in step 1, in the account identities below, or in step 3.

The link can work and still connect the wrong things. Three accounts have to be the same one:

- **The Merchant Center account the app feeds.** The app shows it as its connected account. Google's setup help for the app warns that if your Google email reaches several Merchant Center accounts, you should check you selected the right one.
- **The Merchant Center account linked to this Google Ads account.** Check it in Google Ads under Tools › Data manager › Connected products › Google Merchant Center, or in Merchant Center under Settings › Access and services › Apps and services. Google says link status can be viewed from either side.
- **The Merchant Center account each existing campaign uses.** It's fixed when the campaign is created and can't be changed afterwards. The Google help pages for campaign setup don't say where an existing campaign displays it. The practical test is the campaign's own product list (step 3): if it shows none of the products the app syncs, suspect the account or the campaign's selection (step 3). If the app now feeds a different Merchant Center account, existing campaigns don't follow it. You need new campaigns.

Four more link facts catch replatformed or inherited setups:

- **Admin access on both sides.** An admin in Merchant Center starts the link request, and an admin in Google Ads approves it. If you're an admin on both accounts, the link is approved automatically.
- **No manager accounts.** You can't link a Google Ads manager account to Merchant Center. Link the advertiser's own account.
- **Unlinking cuts off product data.** After an unlink, campaigns stop using that account's product information.
- **An Ads connection in the app isn't a product link.** Shopify's app can connect Google Ads without a Merchant Center account, but that sets up conversion measurement without syncing any products.

## 3\. Read the campaign's product list

Google Ads has a Products page that shows which products can appear in ads, at account level or filtered to one campaign. Google's current help pages describe it in differing forms. One reaches it from inside the campaign (Products & store › Products), with a status of "Approved" on the "All products" tab. Another places it under Assets, with a "Diagnostics" tab and a status of "Ready to serve". Use whichever your account shows. The question is the same: can these products serve in this campaign?

Read the list three ways. Each points to a different fix.

- **Products are there but can't serve.** This is eligibility. Google lists disapproval and being out of stock as reasons. Check the issues in Merchant Center. Also check shipping: if it isn't set up for a country the campaign targets, the campaign may not run. Don't read the Shopify app's "Approved" as an ads verdict. Google's help for the app defines it as "successfully synced to Merchant Center".
- **Products are there but marked Excluded.** This is product groups in Standard Shopping, or listing groups in Performance Max. Google says products "must be part of a product group to be eligible for ads", and that "Excluded" means they "are not part of any active listing group". After a platform change, look for groups built on item IDs. Google notes that if the data source is updated with all-new item IDs, product groups subdivided by item ID must be edited by hand to match.
- **The products you expect are missing.** This can be the campaign's selection, or the wrong Merchant Center account (step 2), among other causes. When you create a Shopping campaign, choosing data sources by feed label is optional. You can select one specific feed label, use all available feeds, or select by country of sale. Only with a specific label does the campaign see just the data sources carrying it. Shopify's multi-market setups can move products into new data sources with country-code labels such as "US". Google warns that campaigns filtering on the old data source label stop capturing the moved products, while campaigns targeting all products aren't affected. Also check any inventory filter in the campaign settings, and that your product data's countries and languages match the campaign's countries.

## 4\. Wait for each check, not for the total

Every documented time below belongs to one step and one publisher:

| After you… | Check | Documented window |

| Edit products in Shopify later | The change in Merchant Center | Shopify Help: typically within a few hours. Google Merchant Center Help: 24–48 hours for platform changes |

None of these pages says whether the windows overlap. So don't wait for a grand total. Move to the next check once the one before it shows a result. Call a step stuck only when its own window has passed, using the longer figure where Shopify and Google differ. For a first connection, that means not judging an empty campaign until products are under the app's source, have a status, and have had up to 48 more hours to reach Google Ads.

## The order that saves time

1. **Where do the products come from?** Look at the breakdown by source in Merchant Center, not the count. If they don't come from your platform's app, connect the app to the Merchant Center account you plan to advertise from.
2. **Is that the account linked to Google Ads, and the one your campaign uses?** Check the link in Data manager or in Apps and services. Test the campaign through its product list. If it was built on another account, create a new campaign.
3. **Can the products serve in this campaign?** On the campaign's Products page, sort the problem using the three main readings: can't serve (eligibility), Excluded (product or listing groups) or missing (selection or account).

A product count shows that products arrived. The source tells you who sent them. The link and the campaign's product list tell you whether Google Ads can use them.
